Defending champion John Shuster finished the round-robin portion of the USA Curling National Championships undefeated by beating Scott Dunnam’s rink 7-4 on Thursday in Spokane, Wash.

Shuster, the Chisholm native and Superior resident who curls at the Duluth Curling Club, finished 9-0 to lead the 10-player competition and earn the top seed in the Page Playoffs.

Shuster, the skip, and teammates Chris Plys, John Landsteiner (both of Duluth) and Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.) — three of whom won gold in the 2018 Winter Olympics — will face Rich Ruohonen at 2 p.m. today, with the winner qualifying for Saturday’s championship match.

If Shuster loses, he would face either Dominik Maerki or Chase Sinnett later today.
