The Duluth Huskies held off the Willmar Stingers in the ninth inning to win 3-2 on Saturday night before 540 fans at Wade Stadium and sneak into sole possession of the Northwoods League Great Plains East Division.
Nic Kent and Matt Hogan each had two hits and scored a run as the Huskies took a 3-0 lead behind seven shutout innings from starter Dane Morrow.
Morrow allowed just five hits and struck out eight before Mason Bryant relieved for the final two tense innings to earn the save.
The Stingers, which fell a game behind Bismarck in the Great Plains West, scrambled for a run in the eighth on a walk and two singles, then added another run in the ninth in a myriad of ways. Andrew Lucas reached on an error to open the inning, advanced to second on a balk by Bryant and then scored on back-back passed balls.
A walk and a hit batsman put two runners on with no outs, but Bryant settled down to strike out the next three batters.
