Two Harbors completed its sweep of Silver Bay with a 68-46 win over the Mariners at home Thursday, Feb. 21.
Instead of the high scoring, back and forth affair that characterized their first meeting, the Agate defense took center stage. Two Harbors allowed only 13 points in the first half and took a 31-13 lead into the locker room.
During the teams' first meeting Jan. 31, senior Jayden Ruberg broke his own record for scoring in a single game in an 80-79 Two Harbors win. Ruberg scored 58 points overall and 11 straight over the final three minutes to lead his team from a seven point deficit to its first win over the Mariners since the 2014-15 season.
Ruberg scored 28 points in the rematch and Carson Wenger scored 16 for the Agates.
Silver Bay played better in the second half, scoring 33 points, but Two Harbors continued to score at will and the Mariners couldn't close the deficit.
Junior Riley Tiboni scored 14 points to lead Silver Bay and Mason Ollman had 13 in the loss.
Silver Bay (7-16) finished its regular season with a 73-63 loss to Nashwauk-Keewatin Monday, Feb. 25, and an 80-64 loss to Duluth Marshall the following day. The Mariners will have to wait until Saturday, March 2, to find out who they will face in the Section 7A tournament that begins March 4.
Two Harbors (9-15) has tripled its win total from a year ago, when the team won just three games. Ruberg has led the area in scoring throughout the season with more than 31 points per game.
The Agates were scheduled to play Aitkin on Thursday, Feb. 28; results were unavailable by press time. The next game is in Barnum at 7:15 p.m. Friday, March 1.
The Section 7AA tournament begins Tuesday, March 5.
