Duluth native and former Minnesota Duluth captain Dominic Toninato was called up on Wednesday by the Colorado Avalanche from the American Hockey League. On Thursday, he picked up his first NHL goal just over five minutes into his return to the big league.
Toninato, a former standout for Duluth East High School, gave the Avs a 1-0 lead over the Winnipeg Jets 5:21 into the first period of his first NHL game of 2018-19. Colorado won 4-1 in Winnipeg.
Toninato played 37 games with the Avalanche last season as a rookie - recording two assists - but until Wednesday had spent all of this season in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles. He has six goals and nine assists in 37 games with the Eagles this year.
Toninato, 24, played four seasons at UMD from 2013-17, captaining the Bulldogs to the 2017 NCAA Frozen Four and national championship game at United Center in Chicago.
