The skip of the United States' Olympic gold medal-winning curling team is bringing a national championship event to the Northland.
The first 5 and Under National Bonspiel will take place Feb. 22-24 at the Duluth Curling Club. Five and under refers to teams made up of players with five or fewer years of experience in the sport. USA Curling announced the tournament Tuesday morning.
“After traveling the country and seeing the enthusiasm of new curlers, a few of us got together with the mission of giving those new curlers something special to strive for,” John Shuster tweeted.
USA Curling credited Shuster, a Chisholm native and Superior resident, with the idea.
“Shuster has been committed to #growthegame and dreamed up the 5 and under national championship,” it said in a news release. “He wanted to bring together the best and most enthusiastic curlers from across the country and invite them to compete at the club that fostered his Olympic dream and help them in their own curling journey.”
USA Curling, the US Women’s Curling Association and the Duluth Curling Club will put on the inaugural event for 2019.
Team Shuster won the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
