Running: Curnow trail marathon is Saturday
A field of about 500 runners will depart the Lake Superior Zoo at 6 a.m. Saturday and make their way toward Carlton as part of the 26th Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon.
The course, consisting of rough, wooded trails, makes up roughly one leg of the Voyageur Trail Ultramarathon, which is July 28. Formerly known as the Half-Voyageur Trail Marathon, the race — hosted by the Northern Minnesota Track Club — was renamed in 2013 in honor of area trail-running ambassador Eugene Curnow.
Saturday's winner is expected to reach the finish line along the Munger Trail in Carlton about 9:20 a.m.
A year ago, Matthew Eidenschink was victorious in 3 hours, 23 minutes and 33 seconds. Gretchen Metsa (4:05:42) was the women's champ.
