Northwoods League: Loggers start fast, sweep Huskies

The La Crosse Loggers picked up Wednesday where they left off Tuesday at Wade Stadium, pumping across four runs in the top of the first inning en route to an 8-3 victory and a Northwoods League sweep before 1,499 fans.

Donta Williams doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Loggers, who at 8-1 have the best record in the league, plus a two-game lead over second-place Willmar in the North Division and a 2 1/2-game cushion on the Huskies.

After Duluth's Nicholas Sogard made it a 5-3 ballgame in the seventh via a two-run single that scored Justin Mitchell and Michael McCann, La Crosse responded with a three-run eighth to blow things open. The Loggers were coming off Tuesday's 10-inning 11-10 win in which they pounded out 16 hits.

The Huskies travel to St. Cloud today looking to extend their six-game winning streak over the Rox.
