Prep report: Records fall at Polar League meet

Esko's boys team and the Two Harbors girls claimed championships at the Polar League meet Wednesday in Two Harbors.

The Eskomos amassed 161 points, while Moose Lake-Willow River was second at 100.

On the girls side, the Agates rang up 149 points, and second-place Esko totaled 106.

Several records were broken at the meet, including:

• Cromwell-Wright's Nic Johnson ran the 100-meter dash in 10.88 seconds, smashing the old mark of 11.18 seconds. Johnson's time is the best in Class A. Mora's Cal Wright (10.98) held that distinction until Wednesday.

• Johnson also helped the Cardinals break the Polar League's 800 relay record. He joined Ben Hansen, Kannon Korpela and Cameron Cahoon to run a 1:33.42, topping the previous best of 1:34.96.

• South Ridge's Nick Carlson established a new standard in the triple jump — 44 feet, 7.75 inches.

• Cromwell-Wright's Shaily Hakamaki set a record in the long jump by producing a 16-0.5, and did the same in the triple jump with a leap of 34-6.25.
