Amsoil Arena ice maintenance crews started flooding the rink and painting the ice for the 2019-2020 college hockey season at 6 a.m. Monday.

Crews began by painting several layers of white paint on the ice to make a blank canvas for the placement of artwork and logos. The tradition of painting the rink white stems from the early days of televising games; the white ice makes it easier for the viewer to see the puck.

According to ice maintenance foreman Jake Magdzas about 300 gallons of biodegradable water-soluble white paint and over ten gallons of color paint are used to create the surface. The process of painting the rink takes approximately 12 hours.
