Prep report: Eleven Northland wrestlers go to state meet

DULUTH — Eleven wrestlers representing four Northland schools will hit the mat this weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul for the MSHSL state wrestling tournaments.
The team competition, in which no Northland teams remain, takes place on Thursday, while the two-day individual tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m.
All 11 will be competing in AA brackets, with Hibbing fielding six, Grand Rapids three and both Rock Ridge and Proctor/Hermantown one apiece after section 7 individual competition last Saturday.
Grand Rapids senior Dusty Wilke puts a 32-0 season on the line in the 170-pound bracket, opening with Riley Gill of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart. On the other half of the same bracket, 21-10 Cooper Hendrickson of Hibbing opens with Ashton LaBelle of North Branch.
Zach Willke has a 33-5 record for Grand Rapids at 182 and will open with Mac Bouwman of Totino-Grace. Hibbing is also represented here with 31-13 Thomas Hagen, who opens with Lano Oduwaiye of Simley.
At 160, Hibbing’s Bryson Larrabee (33-12) meets Bryce Burektt of Watertown-Mayer.
Drew Shay (27-12) will wrestle for Hibbing against Hayden VanderVoort of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in the opening round.
Ian Larrabee of Hibbing represents Northland heavyweights, opening with Max Olson of Fairmont/Martin County West in the 220-pound class.
Eighth grader Christian Jelle of Hibbing has a 29-2 record and will wrestle Easton Miller of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in his opener.
Freshman Asher Brenden of Grand Rapids is 30-13 and will meet Cyler Ruhoff of Foley in his opener at 106 pounds.
Rock Ridge’s lone representative is at 120: Asher Hedblom (34-7), a senior who’ll open against Chandler Mickelson of Perham.
Zak McPhee is Proctor/Hermantown’s sole state wrestler. The 41-4 sophomore will wrestle Nate Berchtold of South St. Paul in the 152 bracket.
Floodwood 52, Bigfork 44
A 16-point game from Hailey Bergin with four 3-pointers helped the seventh-seeded Polar Bears advance from a Section 7A second-round game on Wednesday night.
Kalli Fjeld added 10 points for Floodwood (14-9), which advances to the third of four quarterfinals Saturday at Romano Gym in Duluth.
