The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident, reported at 6:57 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Morrison County Jail.
The Sartell, Minn. based company, however, has faced allegations of failing to provide adequate care to inmates, including 27-year-old Hardel Sherrell, who died in 2018 in the Beltrami County jail in Bemidji after his pleas for help were ignored by jail and medical staff.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 59-year-old Fergus Falls man who died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds.
At one point after the West Central Drug Task Force attempted a traffic stop, a Minnesota State Patrol trooper and an Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputy discharged their handguns, fatally striking a white male in the vehicle.

The unsolved case leaves open the questions of who killed the husband and father of four and why they pulled the trigger. It was the first homicide under Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen’s leadership and the only unsolved murder under active investigation in the county. The lack of eyewitnesses is the biggest hurdle in the investigation, Larsen said, which has thus far resulted in circumstantial evidence and a list of possible suspects, some of whom have no clear alibi.
