Duston Steeke, 17, of Detroit Lakes, underwent a major open heart surgery that required moving his aortic valve to his pulmonary valve, and replacing the pulmonary valve with a donated one. His parents were told the operation would take five hours, and recovery would take five to 10 days. “The surgery lasted 18½ hours,” his dad said. “It was horrible. It was the longest day of our lives.”
A close family friend says the Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, couple had confided in her about a suicide pact due to their declining health. Both had been diagnosed with cancer.
The couple and their two dogs were found dead at a residence in Lakeview Township, near Detroit Lakes, on Sept. 27.
The bodies of a man and woman, along with two deceased dogs, were found on the 25000 block of County Road 6 in a Lakeview Township residence on Sept. 27, according to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
