Philip Meany

PHILIP MEANY Philip Kemp Meany, 82, passed away on March 29, 2014.
A 50-year resident of Duluth, he was born on July 7, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. After completing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Iowa in 1956, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Florence, Italy. After returning to the United States, he taught at Ashland College in Ashland, Ohio, and at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and then joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota Duluth. An associate professor in the School of Fine Arts, he taught drawing, silk-screen printing and design for 35 years, retiring in 1996. During his time at the university, his work was featured in several exhibitions including the “Black Tulip” series. His retirement years were filled with grandchildren, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, traveling, home and garden design projects and enjoying the North Shore of Lake Superior.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, their four children, John, Ann, Robert (wife Julie) and Kathryn (husband Steven); and grandchildren Michelle and Christopher Meany, Connor and Ryan Meany, and Austin and Lucy Wilson.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at French River Lutheran Church. Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church (5310 Ryan Road, Duluth, MN 55804).
