The city of Duluth Parks and Recreation and Parks Maintenance divisions need volunteers and others to participate in:
* The annual Clean and Green spring cleanup effort
* Beach sweeps to clear trash from the Park Point beach areas
* Adopt-a-Park, a park-maintenance program
* Adopt-a-Trail, a trail-maintenance program

* National Trails Day
* The installation of playground equipment at Chester Bowl and Park Point
* Winterizing the Rose Garden each fall
* Flooding ice skating rinks
* Removing buckthorn at the Hartley nature area and along the Western Waterfront Trail
* Repairing, maintaining and/or improving the Chester, Congdon, Kingsbury Creek, Lincoln Park, Hartley and Mission Park hiking trails.
* Maintaining and realigning the Hartley Bike Trail
* Maintaining gardens in neighborhood parks

* Special events through the Sentence to Serve Program
* Senior programs
The Duluth Public Library and its branches need about 4,300 hours of volunteer work. Last year, approximately 120 volunteers helped cover the tasks, which include:
* Participating in the Bookworm Garden Club, which creates and maintains some of the flower beds around the main library, downtown
* Assisting library patrons with genealogy questions
* Shelving books and helping in various other ways

The Duluth Fire Department needs:
* More residents to join the hundreds who already are shoveling out hydrants
* Interns in its fire prevention office to help with prevention programs
* Civic organizations and others to install smoke detectors and participate in other programs
The Duluth Police Department needs participants in:
* Police Explorers
* Neighborhood watch groups
