Minnesota lost one of its finest sons with the passing of Sidney Mason ("Duluth civic leader Sidney Mason dies," Feb. 1). In so many respects he was the essence of good citizenship. Although he represented Duluth in the Legislature, he was fully committed to the well-being of all Minnesotans, and in his quiet fashion he managed to forge coalitions on pieces of vital legislation, particularly those that created jobs.
Sid would be classified as a moderate Republican, but not once did I see him put politics ahead of community interests. In so many ways, this former naval pilot reflected the finest values of the "greatest generation."
We have lost one our finest, but his commitment to service will continue in all who knew him.
