Reader's Views: Women's, girls' sports getting snubbed

With all the coverage of the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team winning the national title, I wonder if there would have been so much if it had been the women's team that had won.

With all the coverage of the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team winning the national title, I wonder if there would have been so much if it had been the women's team that had won.

It seems to me there is less coverage of women's and girls' sports lately. The boys' state tournaments were on TV, but I couldn't find the girls.' I saw there was TV coverage of the Wisconsin boys even though there were no local teams playing.

Another thing I noticed is that after former UMD women's hockey coach Shannon Miller won her discrimination lawsuit ("Jury sides with Miller, orders UMD to pay in discrimination suit" March 16), questions were raised about how her settlement would be paid. Then, the next month, I read about the chancellor getting a raise ("Raise slated for UMD chancellor," April 7).

To me it seems like women's and girls' sports are not as important anymore.
