Reader's views: Letter politicized something that was personal

The writer of the June 12 letter, "Councilor's tax delinquency a betrayal of public trust," was way off base regarding Duluth City Councilor Tony Cuneo's property tax situation. He politicized something that was personal.

He wrote of Cuneo: "Is it the public's fault he saw fit to purchase a rental unit that needed costly repairs? I wonder how long his tenants would be able to stay in their units if they were thousands of dollars behind in rent."

To the best of my knowledge, Cuneo never blamed the public for his personal finances, and being delinquent in taxes owed is not the same as being delinquent in rent due. As far as I know, owing property taxes is not illegal.

The letter writer also opined: "Duluth taxpayers should hold him responsible for this betrayal by choosing a more qualified individual in the voting booth in 2011." From what I have read regarding this issue, Cuneo will most assuredly have this thrust in his face if he chooses to seek another term.

As I recall some of the venomous comments directed at Cuneo already, I wonder if there are sour grapes here due to the letter writer's unsuccessful attempt to gain the public's trust in his own election efforts. I wonder if the writer has asked himself, when pondering his own political success, "Is it the public's fault?"
