I am writing in response to the Aug. 6 letter, "Voting not the same as getting a fishing license," which expressed reservations about voter ID laws.

The letter reaffirmed what many feel voter ID laws amount to: poll taxes. The idea that people can only vote with valid identification, which sometimes comes at a cost, is indeed troubling. If any current or future voter ID laws include this provision, citizens rightfully should reject such discriminatory legislation. However, if the letter writer would have taken the time to actually read his own state of Wisconsin's voter ID bill (Assembly Bill AB-7), he would have learned individuals can obtain a Wisconsin identification card from the Department of Transportation free of charge if they specifically request not to be charged.

I urge citizens to support voter ID laws to ensure an accurate and reliable count in all future elections. What could be more "common sense" than that?
