Reader's view: Why doesn't welfare require drug tests?

The article on the front page of the May 7 News Tribune about the accused heroin dealer now facing charges caught my attention ("Man faces drug charges after police chase in West Duluth").

The article on the front page of the May 7 News Tribune about the accused heroin dealer now facing charges caught my attention ("Man faces drug charges after police chase in West Duluth").

It's not that I'm not concerned about the drug problem in our city; I believe our drug task force and Duluth Police Department ought to be commended for their efforts to rid our streets of poison.

But what turned my head in the article was that EBT cards were found at the suspect's home that investigators said the man was taking in trade for heroin. I am aware that not all EBT recipients use drugs. Still, my question is this: Why do I have to be drug-tested to get my paycheck and EBT recipients do not?
