Public universities across America are subsidized by taxpayer money. Students wanting a biased religious system have thousands of private universities from which to choose. Public campuses always have attracted more progressive voices, people who challenge the status quo and typically are not interested in religion interfering with their studies.

Extreme white Christians and conservatives cause an uproar on public campuses because the very reason for these universities to exist is to encourage progressive and unique ideas separate from religion.

Our nation relies on these hotbeds of discussion to keep us competitive in a global, secular world. Our secular democracy needs to uphold the Constitution the way it was written, with the separation of church and state.

I hope Wisconsin voters look very closely at their government leadership and keep their excellent university system free of religious influence ("Hearing on UW protest bill shows conflicting views on campus speech," May 14).
