If we are to imagine that all of our previously beloved Founding Fathers were all unworthy of our respect and that all recognition of their deeds is now to be ignored and that all the monuments that were erected to honor them must come down, then what about the recent senators and presidents who have proved to be murderers, philanderers and rapists? They, too, must be shown as their true selves in an honest portrayal of the facts, regardless of their contributions to America.
We have not learned much from history if we have not learned that our morals and what is considered to be acceptable behaviors change with the times. What constitutes a respectable person in one era may evolve into a different feeling as our knowledge evolves.
What is honest and respectable? Do we dishonor a person based on the mores of today or judge them on their accomplishments and contributions to our country based on the acceptable behavior of their times? Or should we continue to rewrite history to fit others' narratives.
