There's a kitschy response to voting other than a major party in any election: "But you're throwing your vote away!" It's possible that well-meaning people actually believe this is true. That's unfortunate.
Voting isn't only about the method of an electoral college. It's about showing a percentile measurement of dissent. It's an indicator that there are people out there willing to do away with a popular identity in order to make a stand for something meaningful. It's a method for remaining honest to your convictions in regards to whom you would place your trust in a governmental capacity.
Choosing to vote for the lesser of two evils when you have the choice, and desire, to vote for someone/anyone else is the purest form of wasteful voting that one can promote.
Consider making conscious decisions when you vote. And if you don't like the candidates in the major parties, don't settle for them - that is throwing away your vote.
