It feels as if someone has thrown acid on my psyche.
Yes, I am, indeed, a fat pig who used to have blood coming out of my wherever. That’s true. It’s also true that long, long ago, when I was a cute, young woman, certain men seemed to believe they had a total right to grope me in public, as if my privates were public property.
And that’s just me. What about Hispanics, Muslims, Gold Star parents, disabled people, African-Americans and all the other innocent people verbally assaulted for months by the now newly elected Leader of the Free World?
How are we to unsee those dirty images or unhear those hate-filled words? The haters are being enabled and many of us are under threat.
After an election, we’re used to dealing with political disagreements and policy differences. But if you’re a white man, one of his natural constituency - as News Tribune Editorial Page Editor Chuck Frederick is - none of the slime was directed at you. For you, the unity called for in the News Tribune’s Nov. 9 editorial will be easy (Our View: “Priority No. 1 this morning after: Unity”). Unity is going to take a while for the rest of us.
How can we get over it if we don’t know when, if ever, it will stop?
