Civilizations always rise and fall. President-elect Donald Trump could bring us to the brink. Humans always have been driven by power. Trump lusts for power and attention yet knows nothing about world affairs and seems uninterested in intelligence briefings to expand his knowledge.
He campaigned much like German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, working crowds and using and repeating simple but catchy phrases while playing on pride, fear and anger. People claim they voted for change but cannot verbalize what change they want. Unsurprisingly, Trump also never has verbalized a plan for change. He has no substantive policies. Build a wall. Arrest Hillary Clinton. Bring back jobs. Deport illegals. Repeal Obamacare. All either can’t or won’t happen.
His supporters reject facts. They are “post facts.” It doesn’t matter if almost all of Trump’s statements fall between “half truth” and “pants on fire.” They now are claiming he won the popular vote, which he lost by over 2½ million votes.
How does the family-values, Christian right rationalize its support? Trump has struggled to explain his stance on abortion, the hallmark social issue for many Republicans. Morally, he has spoken with blatant racism and sexism, mocked disabled people, and boasted about adulterous affairs. There are abundant examples easily found online. These are Christian values?
Our country never has been so divided. I don’t see how we can reconcile. Don’t think what happened in Germany can’t happen here. History has a way of repeating.
I fear for our planet because Trump thinks climate change is a hoax. I fear for human rights. I fear tyranny and the hate he has spread. Keep your eyes open. You cannot allow others to be stripped of rights and dignity without it coming back home to you. I’ll be supporting human rights, helping others, and trying to find peace.
