Reader's view: Time is now to act on renewable energy

We all have seen the bumper sticker that reads, "If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention." I have never been one for bumper-sticker logic, but observing this oil tragedy in the Gulf definitely has me outraged.

We all have seen the bumper sticker that reads, "If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention." I have never been one for bumper-sticker logic, but observing this oil tragedy in the Gulf definitely has me outraged.

Watching BP's bottom line take priority over its responsibility for cleaning up its mess, and with a government that doesn't really seem to mind, has been enough to make anyone take notice. I believe the corruption and special treatment America gives to the oil companies has really come through in the past couple of months. It is time for the American people to demand a change of action.

The time is now to move America to alternative and renewable forms of energy. We see the oil companies do not have the competence nor the care to deal with an emergency like this, so there is no reason to continue to have them be our main energy supplier.

I strongly urge President Obama and all of our elected officials to pursue more efforts to research renewable and sustainable forms of energy. Small strides have been taken to harness wind and solar energy, as well as gasoline-free automobiles, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Renewable energy could mean a completely new job market in the future for research and labor -- not to mention the positive environmental impact it could have.

I believe green jobs are the future for America and could help pull us out of the financial rut we have been in for some time. Inevitable patents on green energy are up for grabs and our Congress should seize this opportunity. The time to act is now!
