Reader's view: Time for local officials to lead

We in Duluth have two top officials, and I believe it is time for them to step up to the plate and do what they were hired to do: Lead the city and the school district.

We in Duluth have two top officials, and I believe it is time for them to step up to the plate and do what they were hired to do: Lead the city and the school district.

So far, most of what we have heard from Mayor Don Ness and Superintendent Keith Dixon is complaining about lack of funding.

My advice to these two gentlemen is to look at the facts. There are not sufficient funds to meet all the requests from citizens for services, and it appears the situation will not improve in the near future.

The time has come for them to act like leaders and make necessary adjustments so Duluth can have balanced city and school district budgets for the next year.

Granted, there is no easy way around it, but it would be beneficial to both if they'd take action to ease the situation.

The mayor has been aware of the city's obligation for health care and that problem for more than eight years. Now is the time to act.

I hope Superintendent Dixon finally realizes the red plan is

2 years old and needs some revisions. Modifying and/or scrapping the red plan would be a start. Cuts should be made in administrative offices, something that wouldn't really affect students.

It is time for Dixon to lead the district in a positive direction rather than with reckless bonding and spending.

It is time for Ness and Dixon to stop complaining and really get to work and produce some positive results for the city and school district.
