My Aug. 21 letter, "The Northland has a lot to be thankful for," left out pluses due to the News Tribune's 300-word limit on letters. Here are more positive happenings to be added to our good fortune as a region in our great, generous and caring nation.

A very special August event featured the four-day visit of tall sailing ships and drew

220,000 visitors to our city of 87,000 Duluthians. Added to this were major events, each drawing 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each, such as the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in the winter, Grandma's Marathon in the spring and among the world's best, and the summer bluesfest. Plus, there's Bentleyville's display of Christmas holiday lighting in Bayfront Festival Park.

Higher education is marked by growth to 11,800 students at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Lake Superior College has experienced rapid growth with its special industrial programs. Spectacular change has marked the College of St. Scholastica, identifying it as one of the nation's outstanding women's colleges into a much larger co-educational school of learning. Cloquet's Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College has developed from an institution primarily for educating Native Americans into one also serving all other American students. Finally, new buildings cover the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus to accommodate a larger student body.

The Duluth area long has been well and responsibly served by radio, television and daily newspaper media.
