Thanks are due to the News Tribune for its great support for increasing the tobacco tax, as detailed in its March 20 "Our View" editorial, "Here's a tax clearly worth celebrating."
As a mother, I am appalled at the tactics the tobacco industry uses to entice children to smoke, including flavored cigarettes. Raising the tax on cigarettes is the most effective way to keep kids from starting to smoke. The increased cost also may help current smokers quit.
The editorial in support of the tobacco tax increase was excellent. As it stated, a tax increase on tobacco could save lives.
