The School Board recently "borrowed" $5 million from its general fund for the red plan, just after passing a resolution not to use money approved by voters in the fall referendum for that purpose. Now, the operating budget is short $4.5 million?
Red plan proponents are looking out for our children? So our kids can sit in overcrowded, big schools with a shortage of teachers and programs? Even though the Humphrey Institute and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation both commissioned studies showing that smaller schools and lower enrollment boosted achievement and increased safety?
The School Board and superintendent are now experts in economic development. By robbing teachers of jobs, children of programs and teachers, and taxpayers, they can afford to support a bevy of Johnson Controls employees, lawyers, lobbyists and the local construction industry. On one side of their mouths they cry poor. On the other, they spit out dollars -- to the people least associated with education.
We deserve better in Duluth. I encourage residents to write letters to the Minnesota Department of Education, to join a group fighting for our city, to do what they can. Anyone who does will feel better about themselves and about not rolling over and letting this happen.
We can all feel better about our city.
