Reader's view: Reporting on chief's brother was good journalism

It seems a lot of readers are upset with the story about Chief Gordon Ramsay's brother and his cocaine problem being published on the front page ("Police chief's brother arrested," Jan. 17).

It seems a lot of readers are upset with the story about Chief Gordon Ramsay's brother and his cocaine problem being published on the front page ("Police chief's brother arrested," Jan. 17).

In defense of the News Tribune, I have to side with the premise that a story like this is news. If it had not been published, or if it had been buried on page 4 in a small two-paragraph mention or something, there would have been an outcry that the News Tribune was not giving the story the attention it should in order to shield the chief from embarrassment.

The story raised questions. Did the police chief know of his brother's drug problem? If so, was he following his duty and dealing with it, as any law enforcement officer would be obligated to?

If he did not know, it is too bad. But one has to wonder.

I wonder if the chief will use his personal connection and his duty as a police officer to learn where the drugs were coming from. Will we see more of the story as it unfolds? I hope so because as sad as it must be for the chief to experience this, it is equally important and interesting to those of us who follow the news as this story continues.

As for the chief: I sincerely feel his pain.
