This is in regard to the lawsuit filed by St. Luke's against the News Tribune and two members of its staff ("St. Luke's sues Duluth News Tribune over reporting on surgeon," Sept. 20).
I would like to ask the people of St. Luke's who made this decision. Don't they read the paper? They must not. If they did, they would know that for a quarter of a century reporter Mark Stodghill has covered complex and unfortunate occurrences with depth, sensitivity and unimpeachable integrity. To include him in a lawsuit for defamation makes a citizen turn to look at the filers and say, "What?"
I personally hope the suit just gets dropped. St. Luke's is a popular hospital and will have plenty of business. The News Tribune told some hard stories that needed to be told.
When I see Stodghill's name on a story, my mind thinks, "Let's see what Mr. Integrity has to say." Defamation? I don't think that will stick.
