Such an inspirational piece by UMD student Rachel Brown, suggesting we reach out to each other (Local View: "Meaningful connection can start with 'merry Christmas,'" Dec. 17). Meaningful connections and conversations are often lacking everywhere, including in the halls of Congress.

People did a great job voting this past off-year election. Now it is time to speak up to those we elected to represent us. That was how America's frontline defense against hunger - the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP - recently was protected in the Farm Bill.

It has been how the global fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria has saved 27 million lives since being formed in 2002; this multinational funding source depends on America's pledge, which leverages two-thirds of the total budget from other donors.

This will continue in the coming year if our representatives hear from us. Imagine a world free of these three pandemics. With our calls, letters, and visits to those who represent us, it is possible. So speak up to begin this meaningful conversation.
