In the June 21 article, "Want to mine the Superior National Forest? Get in line," mining prospector Ernie Lehman suggested he can mine more responsibly in Minnesota than in a Third-World nation. But truly civilized people demonstrate the wisdom to protect their most sacred public treasures from private exploitation.

I hope Minnesotans have the acumen to recognize they are the stewards of their backyard jewel that is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and that they will call on their civic leaders to protect this amazing resource from Lehman and his colleagues' reckless and irresponsible sulfide mining proposals -- not just for Minnesotans, but for the country and the world.
