Reader's View: Peacefully resolve Venezuela ASAP

I agreed with the Feb. 17 column by members of Veterans for Peace and Witness for Peace, when it stated that most wars we have been involved with since World War II were unnecessary and wrong (Local View: "US should stop meddling in Venezuela").

Denfeld’s 1947 boys basketball team is the only Denfeld basketball team to win a state title. The team’s head coach was Lloyd Holm. Team members were Rudy Monson, Larry Tessier, Paul Nace, Kenneth Sunnarborg, Eugene Norlander, Howard Tucker, Tony Skull, Jerry Walczak, Bruce Budge, Keith Stolen and student manager Bob Scott.

However, there are times when it is our duty to help our neighbors in need. Venezuelan people are starving because former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and President Nicolas Maduro destroyed their country with oil and other resources. They must be totally incompetent. Maduro and the military leaders are fat and holding power, but the new designated leader has the support of the Parliament and most people and should be allowed to make a change. I do not think that we should send troops there but work with Organization of American States and other leaders to peacefully resolve the tragedy.

To say that Chavez or Maduro are leftist is not the issue. I think they do not know left or right when it comes to management. There are examples of right-leaning dictators who provided food and other necessities for their people and left-leaning dictators like in the former Soviet Union and in Eastern European communist countries who similarly provided education, food, health care, and housing for their citizens. What Chavez and Maduro have done in Venezuela is awful and has to be resolved peacefully as soon as possible.
