Two letters in the Feb. 5 Readers' Views section missed their true issues.
One letter ("Election of Franken shows state's ignorance") quoted from the Bible. I believe many use Bible passages for devious purposes. They take focus away from the commandments and truth-seeking. If we are not engaged fully to learn, we are second-rate Christians. The first commandment is to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart. The second, to love thy neighbor as thyself, is the greatest commandment, according to Jesus.
The other letter had to do with the Second Amendment ("Gun-control advocates have sinister purpose"). President Obama and his administration are accused of seeking to undo the Second Amendment. But that's totally false. In a speech at a fundraiser in suburban San Francisco in April, Obama said: "We need sensible gun laws. I just got back from Montana where just about everyone has guns. In the culture, fathers and sons bond over hunting. You can't take that away from rural America. But the inner city is different, and we should tighten the law on gun purchase and close the loopholes in gun show sales to unscrupulous buyers. The gun control people and the right to bear arms people are talking past each other about disconnected topics."
Contrary to what the media and special interests say, there is no way any one or any group could repeal the Second Amendment. Anyone paying attention to recent Supreme Court rulings would see the amendment is secure.
