Reader's View: Omar only tweeted the truth

Denfeld’s 1947 boys basketball team is the only Denfeld basketball team to win a state title. The team’s head coach was Lloyd Holm. Team members were Rudy Monson, Larry Tessier, Paul Nace, Kenneth Sunnarborg, Eugene Norlander, Howard Tucker, Tony Skull, Jerry Walczak, Bruce Budge, Keith Stolen and student manager Bob Scott.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota spoke the truth when she pointed out that lobbyists influence politicians with money ("Minn. Rep. Omar apologizes for tweet," Feb. 12). She could have said the same thing about any other lobbying group, but she dared criticize the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. For a politician, that is forbidden.

If the self-righteous press and politicians would become as upset about Israel's violations of human rights and international law as they are about Omar's comments, progress might be possible. As it is, two rogue states, the U.S. and Israel, will continue their brutal policies against the Palestinian people and attempt to shame everyone into silence with bogus claims of anti-Semitism if they dare speak out.

In 2017, Minnesota enacted legislation targeting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, though similar laws have been ruled unconstitutional elsewhere.

Anti-Semitism is a problem, coming mainly from right-wing hate groups. But conflating criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism is ridiculous. If, in the 1980s, South Africa was able to threaten and shame international critics the way Israel does, South Africa might still be an Apartheid state.

The message is clear: Don't question Israel's racist colonial project or you'll be labeled a racist. This is how the boundaries of "legitimate" debate are drawn, while at the same time the boundaries for a Palestinian state are illegally encroached on.

Sen. Chuck Schumer told AIPAC there is no peace in the Middle East because Arabs don't believe in the Torah, as if an ancient religious text was a legal land title. Israel must end its occupation of the West Bank and east Jerusalem, end the siege of Gaza, and return to its pre-1967 borders.

And free speech must be protected in the United States.
