Reader's view: Oberstar working for Washington, not Minnesota

U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar is running on the slogan that he is working for us. We hired him 36 years ago to represent us, but lately it seems he has been hard at work for an agenda originating in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar is running on the slogan that he is working for us. We hired him 36 years ago to represent us, but lately it seems he has been hard at work for an agenda originating in Washington.

If he claims he supports working Minnesotans, why did he vote for an energy tax that would raise our heating and commuting costs and the prices of many things we buy? He said he is pro-life, so why did he vote for a bill that could lead to taxpayer funding of abortions?

His votes for spending, stimulus and bailout plans display a lack of fiscal responsibility that threatens our standard of living and saddles our children with a mountain of debt. We simply cannot afford to have him working here any longer. We need to downsize and will have to let him go.

But don't worry about him; his federal pension is generous. Our 401ks, however, remain in doubt.
