Some are blaming President Obama for all of our economic difficulties. They seem to want us to forget the record of his predecessor. Who could blame them?

President George W. Bush inherited a budget surplus and almost overnight transformed it into a huge deficit. He mishandled a war in Afghanistan and turned it into a quagmire because he was so eager to start a new war in Iraq, which turned into a second quagmire. He lowered taxes while we were in the midst of war, an act so staggeringly irresponsible that it had no precedent in American history. He put both wars, along with a costly prescription-drug benefit, on the tab, so that the enormous costs would simply be kicked down the road. And he took a vibrant economy that was generating jobs at an unprecedented rate and drove it over a cliff, leading to the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Our current president inherited a huge economic mess created by Republicans. Now there are signs that things are starting to get back on track. Why in the world should we hand power back to the people whose disastrous policies created the problems in the first place?
