I disagreed with the News Tribune's "Our View" editorial, "Gay marriage: Let Minnesotans Vote," which was published March 12.
Civil rights issues, as well as public health and safety issues, are not always suitable for the ballot box. (For instance, should we have let southern states vote on whether to abolish Jim Crow laws?) Throughout our country's history, majorities have been perfectly willing to trample the rights of minorities. Sometimes it takes action by elected officials to ensure the rights of all citizens.
We can continue the conversation on same-sex marriage indefinitely, and we probably will. We can converse until we're all blue in the face and still not reach anything near consensus.
Regardless of any of our opinions on the matter, same-sex marriage is inevitable. It's time for lawmakers to do the job for which they were elected and stop wasting the public's time, energy and money. It's time to move on.
