U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar's motto is "Working for you." Certainly he has done some fine things for us in the 8th District, but I recently was disappointed.
I had mailed him a letter a year ago asking for his help in getting a curbside mailbox in the Lakeside-Lester Park area; a curbside mailbox the local postmaster refused to install even though several Lakeside residents were willing to shore the expense.
I did not expect Rep. Oberstar to answer my letter personally; however, I believe he has a staff to do this. I received no response whatsoever. I even mentioned that I had put up a number of lawn signs for him more than 30 years ago. At that time he was in a fierce battle for the DFL endorsement with Tony Perpich. I even asked my union to support Oberstar.
I am retired now, and possibly Rep. Oberstar is not working for retired citizens, possibly only the employed.
In any regard, I have learned that my support of his candidacy at a time he needed help does not guarantee he will support me now.

At least he could have sent me a "Dear John" letter.
