Reader's View: No gun control with GOP in charge

Campaign promises are just that, campaign promises. Reality has shown that once elected members of Congress vote nearly always along party lines. The majority party controls the agenda, the committee leadership, and which legislation moves forward and do not. As nice or qualified as a candidate might be, the party leaders and platform will dictate whether or not his or her promises will materialize.

The NRA has controlled the Republican platform for more than 30 years with its multimillion-dollar contributions to Republican candidates. After each mass shooting all you hear from Republican leaders is, "This is not the time to discuss it" followed by silence.

Republicans took time on over 50 occasions to attempt to repeal Obamacare but rarely if ever to discuss sensible gun-control legislation.

The GOP continuously has deflected discussions about gun issues by claiming (falsely) that the only concern is keeping guns out of the hands of mentally disturbed citizens. Yes, this is part of the issue but by no means all of it. And even here the rhetoric was disingenuous. The administration of President Barack Obama was able to increase background checks on the mentally disturbed. In 2017, the GOP rescinded that legislation and made it easier for the disturbed to purchase firearms.

Another favorite deflection of the NRA and its co-conspirators in the GOP has been claims of Second-Amendment rights. The Second Amendment has the words "right of the people to keep and bear arms." There is no mention of which arms, clip sizes, or semi-versus-automatic firing. I believe we still live in a democracy where today's citizens can decide the conditions under which we live and not those prevalent in the 1700s.

Until voters remove the GOP from control, we will not have meaningful discussions and legislation to control the slaughter of our citizens.
