Just about the only thing missing from the Dec. 30 front-page article, "Neighbors organize to oppose Ordean plan," was a dying polar bear on a melting glacier with a red plan supporter nearby clubbing a baby seal.
How in the world could we build a football stadium where little deer roam? What are we thinking spending millions of dollars on our children? Those meat-
eating little varmints running around my house don't deserve a quality place to go to school much less a beautiful new stadium. We should be spending our time and money running them out to western Duluth and, on our way, stop downtown at the $20 million
alcohol-rehab house to make sure all the folks there are comfortable. Then we could drive over to the $35 million aquarium, only to find it's closed, or stop by the $200 million expansion at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center to make sure we have enough seats to fill the Wisconsin Badgers-UMD Bulldogs game.
In Duluth, projects that have anything to do with hockey, tourism or the misunderstood seem to attract no end to our willingness to spend money. But when it comes to kids and schools, we can't afford it. The economy is bad, the lake level is low and the sky is falling. Can't everyone see?

The red plan is thought out, was publicly debated and was soundly approved by a democratically elected school board. It has the vision to look past a few selfish NIMBYs. We want a new high school and a new stadium. Quality education goes hand-in-hand with quality schools. Anyone who wants to keep and attract families and jobs to this wonderful city can start with quality schools. It's a long-term investment that will pay back all of us. These buildings are for our children -- our children!
