Recently, the News Tribune carried an article about the Women's Care Center, which is scheduled to begin construction this summer in downtown Duluth ("Pro-life clinic to open near abortion provider in downtown Duluth," July 1).
Readers and donors to this project should know that when completed, the facility will duplicate services already offered in the Twin Ports.
The Lake Superior Life Care Center has been in existence for 30 years, offering free pregnancy tests, a free medical clinic, counseling, ultrasound, parenting classes, free baby clothes, diapers, formula and more. The Duluth office is in the Carnegie Building (the old public library), just a few blocks from the abortion clinic. An office in Superior is on Belknap and within walking distance of the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The staff is professional, fully trained, licensed and offers services to everyone with no exception based on income, race, religious affiliation or gender.
The Lake Superior Life Care Center relies on grants and its generous contributors. Over the years the staff and board have come to the wise conclusion it's best to use these donations for its core mission, not for the purchase or construction of a single-use building with the subsequent ongoing cost of heat and maintenance.
Both the Women's Care Center and the Lake Superior Life Care Center are dedicated to the same goal: saving babies. However, readers and donors should question why there is suddenly a need to spend $800,000 on the construction of a new facility when an existing organization is open for business and has a proven track record in serving the public.
