Reader's View: Moral compass pointing left

Upon writing an opinion letter as a left-leaning independent, my letter was referred to as misguided by a conservative and/or Republican in a letter of response.

Upon choosing a president, I refuse to let my head rule my heart, as do many evangelicals and faithful over one commandment, No. 6, "thou shalt not kill," which concerns abortion.

It is my opinion the Republican Party was hijacked by the Christian Coalition of America in the 1980s when it promised to bring its sheep to the voting booth. It seems to believe that one commandment, the sixth, "trumps" all the others.

We now have a President Donald Trump who seemingly is guilty of violating commandments No. 1 (his gods seem to be his monetary holdings), No. 2 (he idolizes himself), No. 3 (we've heard his foul mouth; so to believe he has never used the Lord's name in vain would be naive), No. 7 (he is on wife No. 3, and we've heard his "locker-room talk"), No. 8 (he stole respect of the office through attacks on many), and No. 9 (his false testimonies number more than 1,600 and counting).

These broken commandments are overlooked by the Moral Majority's blind eye to the reality that even Adolf Hitler could run on a pro-life platform in America nowadays and win. Shame on religion for letting a false prophet "trump" nine commandments in favor of just the sixth.

So much for a moral compass now pointing more to the left.
