Reader's view: Local media need to get away from 'Lake Street'

Hooray for the writer of the Feb. 18 letter, "West End, West Duluth are not the same thing." The writer criticized members of the media for never getting the two sections of the Zenith City straight.

When I was active in the media, I found it nearly impossible to explain to fellow staffers from other cities that, as the letter writer pointed out, the ore docks separate West End (now known in some circles as Lincoln Park) from West Duluth (now known in some circles as Spirit Valley).

I think the misunderstanding might be rooted in the fact that media people rarely get out there. Instead, they hang around in downtown Duluth -- in the vicinity of "Lake Street" and "Michigan Avenue."
