I am writing in support of Janet Kennedy, who has announced her candidacy for Duluth City Council At Large.

Kennedy is an African-American woman and lifelong Duluthian. She has long experience living in a minority community in Duluth. From her mother and her church, she learned the core values of respect and care for others. She has worked professionally for many years to serve the needs of people.

She also has served as a volunteer on many civic boards aimed at addressing those needs. She has a deep understanding of how past racial and economic discrimination have worked to leave minority communities especially vulnerable to the economic downturns of recent times.

If elected, her central focus will be the inclusive development of Duluth.

Two years ago Kennedy ran for one of the City Council district seats. Despite some hurtful attacks against her, she ran well, nearly defeating an incumbent. She showed courage and perseverance.

This year Kennedy is running against two incumbents. I respect and like each, but I think the time is past due to open Duluth politics to voices long excluded. Janet Kennedy would bring such a voice. I think she would also be an excellent city councilor.
