In contrast to a letter to the editor published July 28, Jesus was not silent on the issue of same-sex marriage.
Though Jesus did not specifically mention same-sex marriage, the letter's assertion that Jesus had no opinion on the subject is made null and void by Jesus' statement on marriage itself. His words in the gospel of St. Matthew confirm that God intended marriage to be between a man and woman. "And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female?' ... 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh,' " the biblical book reads. Notice that Jesus did not say a man shall be joined to his husband, but to his wife.
He couldn't have been clearer on what a marriage is supposed to be.
