Well, there they go again. It appears some enlightened members of the Duluth City Council wish to concern themselves with political issues outside of their elected realm (“Council weighs in on Standing Rock oil pipeline,” Dec. 6).
Instead of passing fuzzy, good-good feeling resolutions, if they want to do something truly useful, maybe they should concern themselves with the issues affecting this community - issues like the high rate of heroin (“Police, ERs report overdose uptick,” Nov. 29) and the nutshell game of taxation on property owners (“City offers proposal to plug holes in budget,” Dec. 2). It’s one thing for the elderly and fixed-income property owners to eat Spam sandwiches, but it’s another to force them to share an Alpo meal with their pet.
Spending valuable time with issues outside the city limits proves one thing: This council has down time. Maybe it is time to downsize the City Council. With our beloved city being well below the population levels from its heyday, maybe those councilors could pass a resolution to eliminate the at-large positions and/or reduce all their work hours. It would be a winning situation for the taxpayers and the community at large.
