It's a disservice to link facilities plan to levy

Regarding the pending vote on a levy for the Duluth public schools curriculum and program services, it is clear to me there is a need to drive sharper public awareness that both a facilities plan and a levy to support curriculum and service levels, while separate line items on budgets, are fully dependent on each other in providing sustainable educational levels for our district.

This cannot be perceived as a choice of either-or, and it is a disservice to every Duluthian that certain groups and individuals appear to be leveraging their disdain for the long-range facilities plan in a damaging effort that will put the vote for supporting curriculum and services at risk.

Like any business, infrastructure and deliverables fragment the use of coveted and limited revenues. It is a given that that these two items, while not directly relevant to each other as separate cost centers, render an entity irrelevant and unsupportable without necessary independent fiscal planning to their respective focus.

The school district has done its homework well, and the resulting plans for facilities and services will equate the tax burden on Duluthians at a rate that is reported as just average across the state. Both the prescribed plans for these items are not the excesses they are purported to be. They represent foresight and the necessary needs for our district to maintain required efficiencies and services, which, in the end, impacts our entire community, most importantly our youth.

Vote yes, yes and yes on the three areas of the pending levy to maintain the school district's vital placement and effectiveness for our community.
