Reader's view: Hillfest a wonderful neighborhood celebration

What a pleasure it was to experience the success of the very first Hillfest on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Sixth Avenue East and Fourth Street ("Hillside launches its own festival," Sept. 16).

I was privileged to talk with many people from all over Duluth, vendors, and others who had tables at the event. Especially noticeable were the activities for young people. The portable climbing wall was very popular with different ages as were the artistic activities for the youngsters. Who doesn't like drawing on the pavement? And there was the ever-popular bubble-making going on as well.

Our police and fire departments, (with fire truck, of course) were represented by friendly, personable members. Several city and county officials, including some running for election this year, made themselves available. I could tell the live music, plentiful and varied, was truly enjoyed. The numerous food vendors kept us well fed. And, of course, what would an event be without those mini doughnuts?

The success of this first endeavor is sure to signal more future events for the Hillside areas. Those who joined us in celebrating what a great place the Hillside is to live deserve thanks. Also deserving of heartfelt gratitude were the hardworking committee members, sponsors, the city of Duluth and other volunteers who contributed so much.
